1. Quality Over Price

Flashy deals or low monthly membership rates are attractive, but not always effective. Bargain gyms are less likely to have the desired equipment and may even be understaffed. That means there might not be many classes to pick from and things might not be as sanitary as they could be.

Plus, many people even find it easier to talk themselves out of going on the days they lack motivation. After all, they aren’t losing that much money by skipping out.

2. Equipment and Activities

Sometimes folks get excited about fancy exercise equipment and sign up without thinking about whether they’d actually use it. It’s far better to choose a gym with equipment that the gym shopper already knows they like or are interested in trying.

Don’t forget to read through the class list as well. For folks that love CrossFit, joining a gym that offers primarily Zumba classes won’t be the best fit.

For those that plan to take advantage of the classes, it’s important to look at the instructors. Are they qualified to teach CrossFit? Som of the movements, if performed incorrectly, can cause injury. Instructors can minimize risk by teaching the proper techniques and keeping an eye out for those that might be struggling.

What do other people have to say about the gym? In today’s world, it’s really simple to get online and find people raving about or bashing pretty much anything. Check Google or Facebook for reviews from other gym attendees.

Don’t forget to read the negative reviews and the business’ response if they put one. Those are often the ones that gym shoppers can learn the most from, particularly how the business responded.

5. Location

Too often people choose a gym on the other side of town because it’s flashier or has more of what they want. While this isn’t always a bad thing, if the gym is too inconvenient to get to, it’s harder to feel motivated to go.

Gym shoppers should look for gyms close to their home or their workplace if they plan to workout directly before or after work.

6. Hours

Finally, it’s important to choose a gym that will be open at the right time. Too often, people start a gym membership planning to workout before work, only to realize that the gym doesn’t open until 10 am.  If it has 24/7 access that’s always a huge plus.
