Getting to Know Your Coach – The Peacock

Coach Zach made an impression the first time we laid eyes on him. Zach was a visiting athlete from another local CrossFit box, attending the first competition we’d held at our gym (Note: Zach did very well and gave Coach Bonbon a run for his money at the Festivus comp). What really stood out about him was his raw energy and passion. Normally while photographing an event, one spends the majority of the time photographing active competitors in each heat. In Zach’s case, I had to train the lens on him as I’d never seen anyone cheer on their fellow athletes the way he did. At Amoskeag, Coach Zach brings this same passion and intensity to his coaching. He loves what he does and it shows as he brings his best to his job everyday and his athletes. As an example, we had a recent visitor message me and comment:

“I wasn’t going to metcon when I was there, but Zach made me want to push myself. Something about that dude is motivating as f–k. Ever since that day I came to Amoskeag, my mindset has completely changed in the gym…”

His passion doesn’t just stop with getting fit and coaching though, Zach is an active and integral leader of our community at Amoskeag. Whether it be a PR within the gym, a competition outside of the gym or even something personal, you can count on Zach to have your back. We’re so happy you joined us Zach to both demonstrate and also show us how it is to be #AmoskeagStrong!

Honorable Mention: Did you know Zach was voted Best of the BEST Waiter in NH by The Hippo? If you’re lucky enough to catch him at Tek-Nique, you’ll find out why.

Zach CleaningWhat is your athletic background?
Prior to CrossFit, I was doing your average bodybuilding routine Monday-Friday at Golds Gym. I also enjoyed competing obstacle course races and endurance events such as Tough Mudder and GORUCK Challenge.

How did you get into CrossFit?
I hurt my knee during an endurance challenge and decided to take my fitness in a different direction. The combination of strength, skill, and cardiovascular output of CrossFit seemed like the best choice.

What can an athlete do to stay motivated when they are not achieving a result?
Stop and smell the roses. We focus way too much on where we want to go with our goals and rarely take a moment to appreciate how far we have come. If people would just slow down and look back on the progress they have already made they would understand how much they have changed over a relatively short amount of time in their lives. Chill out and enjoy the journey.

Look at that jerk...
Look at that jerk…

What do you expect from the athletes you coach?
A willingness to try and realize their potential without listening to all the doubtful little voices in their head.

What are your personal athletic goals?
To continue building strength both physically in weightlifting and mentally in conditioning and to not take any of it too seriously.

Proudest accomplishment so far in CrossFit?
Becoming a coach and helping motivate others towards their goals. Strength numbers and metcon times are sexy, but it’s the relationships I build that keep me coming back.

What is your favorite CrossFit workout/movement/philosophy to coach?
Favorite movement to coach is the clean. My favorite workout is pretty much anything from the CrossFit Open. The one time of year our scores actually mean something, brings out a different (somehow) louder side of me. I love to motivate my athletes.

What is your favorite workout/movement to do?
Anything where my height is an advantage….so wall balls.

What keeps you motivated as a coach? The Motivator
Seeing the athletes who grind day in and day out. The ones who realize this is all a process and come no matter what the WOD is. Those are the athletes that get me amped to teach.

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the box?
I used to be a party animal. Drinking every night and smoking a pack a day. The entire lifestyle and culture of CrossFit definitely steered me away from that and I am thankful I found it when I did. I am a healthier and happier person because of CrossFit.

Note: We couldn’t obtain a picture of a much larger version of Zach, but he’s walking proof that you can change your lifestyle through clean eating and CrossFit.

Non-CrossFit related
CheeseWhat are you passionate about?
Making myself and others laugh.

What is your favorite movie?
Pulp Fiction

Favorite meal?
Apple and bacon braised lamb Osso bucco with arancini and caramelized Cipollini onions and a demi glace drizzle….or Pizza. Pizza is good too.

Something you might not know about me is:
I starred in two movies in the early ninety’s about a boy being abandoned by his family. Once at his home and again in New York City. But I left the glitz and glamour of Hollywood behind me to teach people how to keep their heels down when they squat. Also I am a Picses.
