January Member of the Month – Marcus

Marcus is our first 2017 member of the month! We have been so thankful to have him be a part of our community, beginning when we had just opened the B-Side where he pioneered our open training format for advanced athletes, kicking off Comp Train at the gym. If you don’t know him you have certainly wondered how many beard contests he has won, but instead you would find that it is CrossFit competitions where he has routinely found the podium. He always brings a smile and positive attitude to the gym. He is a CrossFit OG with his L1, and makes our community better every day. Hooray for Marcus! So let’s find out a bit more about this month’s athlete.

When/How/why did you choose to CrossFit?
It was a few years back so the actual date is a little foggy but safe to say it was after college years. I was bored at the gym and wanted to be pushed by something. I started at Crossfit New Hampshire and never returned to a regular gym.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit Amoskeag?
Tough question. Amoskeag is unique in the Crossfit community of gyms because it allows its members the freedom to workout in an open gym format or join the class. It’s a great space with more than enough equipment as well.

What role have your family/friends played in your CrossFit journey?
Not much actually. I do my own thing.

Who at CFA do you look up to, respect or admire and why?
Basically, everyone at the gym gets my respect. It’s a genuinely nice community and that goes a long way for me.

Favorite WOD/Skill?
Diane is my favorite WOD in Crossfit because I love hand stand pushups. It’s a good feeling when you break through in a set to PR the reps you can get.

Least favorite WOD or skill (your “Goat”)?
I hate running. I hate the hill, I hate the path, and I hate the True Form. I usually like how gyms in the North East scale down the running in the winter but that True Form is really screwing that up for me.

Biggest challenge so far (in CrossFit, health or nutrition)?
Nutrition for me. I have had my ups and downs with my weight and have always struggled with my eating habits. I have always compared my eating habits to others and never understood how to eat for myself.

Proudest accomplishment so far (in CrossFit, health or nutrition)?
In the last 12 weeks I have worked on eating healthy (weighing and measuring food) and lost 14 pounds. It has made a huge difference in my performance and energy levels.

Best experience as part of CFA?
I like holidays when huge groups of people do hero WODs together.

Favorite quote or motto?
I don’t think I am a quote or motto kind of person; I am more of a conversationalist.

When you think it’s tough, difficult or impossible, what keeps you going?
People kicking my ass in a workout. Nothing lights a fire in me like when someone laps me.

Future goals?
I want to go to Costa Rica.

Your message to readers:
Thank you for all for being so cool to workout with and get to know. This gym has some BAMF who really make going into the gym after a stressful week, something I look forward to.
