July Member of the Month – “Light Cheese” Joe Chinnici

First Weightlifting Meet!

Joe Chinnici. The Man, the Myth, the Legend. Come to CFA for any 5am class and you are bound to be greeted by a smiling Joe who always welcomes you with a good morning and a “What’s on deck today?” After suffering a back injury in 2015, Joe has taken it upon himself to rehab slowly and carefully make sure every step and progression is followed. His cerebral approach to his training has paid big dividends. Never in a rush to move on to “bigger, badder and better” movements, Joe spends the time necessary to become a master at each skill. Besides his general good attitude and great coachability Joe also has a great sense of humor and really picks up the spirits of everyone around him. Congratulations to Joe “Light Cheese” Chinici, our July member of the month!

When/How/why did you choose to CrossFit?
Approximately 8 years ago, I looked in the mirror one morning and didn’t like what I saw. It was more than just a body thing; I was eating poorly, out of shape and a bit down. After giving up soda and some of the fast food chain eating, I knew fitness was my next goal. A couple of years ago I was in a summer CrossFit bootcamp (no barbells) and when I watched others lifting I knew I wanted to try it. CFA felt inviting, so I went for it.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit Amoskeag?
The opportunities it has given me. To improve my health, to be social and to be out of my comfort zone frequently.

What role have your family/friends played in your CrossFit journey?
My dad teases regularly about everything which now includes my Crossfit activities. My friends have been very supportive.

Who at CFA do you look up to, respect or admire and why?
I could not possibly mention everyone as anyone who walks through that door is someone that I admire.

Favorite WOD/Skill?
I’m a fan of the Olympic lifts, deadlifts and pistols. Barbell complexes are fun. “Death by” brings out my competitive spirit.

Least favorite WOD or skill (your “Goat”)?
Right now – rope climb and double unders

Biggest challenge so far (in CrossFit, health or nutrition)?
The largest obstacle for me is in the kitchen at home. I have improved my nutrition some. I’m trying to bring the mindset I had during the Nutrition Challenge with me every day. It’s a work in progress.

Proudest accomplishment so far (in CrossFit, health or nutrition)?
Wow tough question. I’ll go with 300+ lbs deadlift.

Best experience as part of CFA?
It was an CFA only competition a while back. I went into it a bit nervous and did well for me but that was not the highlight for me. Karen Clark and Marisa Hardy were competing at the same time – it was unbelievable. Strength, stamina and while it was not easy, the way they made it look easy. It was one of the best athletic moments I’ve witnessed.

Favorite quote or motto?
‘Cause it ain’t where you’re from, it’s where you’re at. – Rakim

Honorable mention:
The sea was angry that day, my friends – like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli… – George Costanza

When you think it’s tough, difficult or impossible, what keeps you going?
I heard someone say you should ask yourself: What would a champion do?

It does work.

Future goals?
Fitness/Nutrition: Compete in a weightlifting event (may have done so by the time you read this); less bad snacking; 1000lb total (deadlift, squat & bench); improved speed in run/row/bike & metcons

Other: Continue to complete items on my bucket list

Your message to readers:
Have fun. That’s not asking too much.

Move the needle today. Even if it is a very small stride towards your goal- do it! You’ll be surprised where it leads you.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all the owners for creating a safe and great environment to be fit.  Thank you coaches for all the guidance and encouragement. And thank you to all the athletes for the support and fun times shared.

Oh, and shout out to the 5am crew!
